Can Tho

Former Can Tho City, Soc Trang and Hau Giang

River capital of the West, floating markets and home of NG AI Farm Park

Best time: December – April (dry season) and August – November (flood season)

Set on the Hau River, Can Tho is the trading hub of the whole delta. Since 2025 the city also includes Soc Trang, rich in Khmer culture, and Hau Giang with its maze of canals. It is home to NG AI Farm Park, the starting point of most NG Travel journeys.

History

  • Settled in the 18th century, it soon became the delta's main market for rice and fruit.
  • By the early 20th century Can Tho was called “Tay Do” – capital of the western south.
  • Can Tho Bridge opened in 2010, joining both banks of the Hau River and opening a new era.

People

  • Vietnamese, Khmer and Chinese communities live side by side, each keeping its own festivals and food.
  • Open and hospitable – a passing stranger is still invited to stay for a meal.

Customs

  • Floating markets start before dawn; boats hang samples on a tall pole to show what they sell.
  • Ooc Om Boc festival – Khmer ngo boat races on the full moon of the tenth lunar month.
  • Don ca tai tu folk music by the river on weekend evenings.
